Cycle NC Photography in Eden, NC: Capturing the Mountains to Coast Ride in Rockingham County

Every year, hundreds of cyclists set out on a week-long journey across North Carolina, pedaling from the Blue Ridge foothills all the way to the Outer Banks. This year, I was there with my camera when Cycle NC rolled into Eden, North Carolina, in Rockingham County.

I’m Autumn Hollifield, an event photographer based in Greensboro, NC, and this post is a look at what it takes to photograph a multi-day cycling event, and why Eden made a great backdrop.

What Is Cycle NC?

Cycle NC is a week-long, supported bicycle tour across North Carolina. This ride began in Mount Airy and finished at Cape Hatteras on the coast. Riders spend the week covering the miles between host towns, camping each night along the route.

Each overnight stop is a small-town celebration. Riders arrive tired and happy, set up tents, refuel, and meet the community that hosts them. It’s a photographer’s dream: movement, landscape, local character, and genuine human moments.

Why Eden, NC, Was a Highlight

Eden sits in Rockingham County, where the Dan and Smith Rivers meet in the Piedmont. For cyclists coming down from the mountains, it’s an inviting evening stop.

At the Eden stop, I photographed:

  • Riders arriving after a long day on the road
  • Camp setup, with tents going up and gear spread out
  • Community interaction between cyclists and local hosts
  • Candid moments of riders resting, eating, and swapping stories

What It Takes to Photograph a Multi-Day Cycling Event

Cycling events are different from a wedding or a studio session. You can’t ask riders to repeat a moment. A few things I focus on:

  1. Anticipating the action. I scout positions along the route and at arrival points before riders come through.
  2. Working with changing light. Early starts and evening arrivals mean shooting in everything from dawn to dusk.
  3. Telling the whole story. Great event coverage isn’t just riders on bikes. It’s the camp, the food, the community, and the small details.
  4. Staying out of the way. Safety comes first for the riders and for me.
