When to Book Senior Portraits in Guilford & Rockingham County (Class of 2027)

The short answer

Book your senior portrait session between June and early September of the summer before senior year. Most Guilford and Rockingham County high schools want yearbook submissions by late October, cap and gown portraits happen separately in the spring, and the two are not the same session.

The three photo sessions nobody explains to you

This is the part that trips up almost every parent I work with. Your senior will likely be photographed three separate times, by two or three different people, for three different reasons.

1. The school's contracted yearbook headshot. Taken on campus in the fall by the school's contracted photographer. Usually a formal drape or tux, plain background, one pose. This is often required to appear in the senior section of the yearbook. You don't book this, the school schedules it.

2. Your senior portrait session. This is the outdoor, personality-driven session with multiple outfits and locations. It's what goes on graduation announcements, in the yearbook ad you buy for your kid, on the wall, and in grandma's Christmas card. Booked with a photographer of your choosing, ideally the summer or fall of  senior year.

3. Cap and gown portraits. Taken in the spring, after caps and gowns are distributed. Separate session, separate purpose. These are the diploma-and-tassel shots, and they cannot be taken in the summer because your senior doesn't have the gown yet.

The mistake I see most: parents assume the school's fall headshot covers everything, then panic in April when they realize they have no real photos of their kid from senior year.

Month-by-month timeline

Spring of junior year (March–May)

Start looking at photographers. This is earlier than most families think, but the photographers whose work you actually like book their summer calendar in the spring. Follow two or three locally, look at full galleries rather than single Instagram images, and ask about pricing before you fall in love with someone's portfolio.

Do now: research photographers, ask your junior what they actually want their photos to look like.

June–July

Prime session time. Long light, green backdrops, and nobody's schedule is wrecked yet by football, band, marching practice, or college applications. Outfit shopping happens here too. Give yourself three weeks between booking and the session so you're not buying something at 9pm the night before.

Do now: book the session, plan three to four outfits, pick locations.

August–early September

The catch-up window. Still workable, but your senior's calendar is closing fast and so is mine. If you're shooting now, expect to work around practice schedules and shoot on weeknight evenings.

Do now: book immediately if you haven't. Confirm your school's yearbook deadline and format requirements.

Late September–October

Yearbook submission season. Most schools in both counties want the file in hand by late October, and the yearbook staff will not chase you. Submit early. The adviser is a teacher with a full course load, not a customer service desk.

Do now: submit the yearbook image in the exact format requested. Order graduation announcements.

November–December

Announcement and holiday gift season. Order prints for grandparents now if you want them by Christmas; labs run long in December.

January–March

Slow months, and a good time for a second session if the fall photos didn't happen or your senior changed their look. Cheaper and easier to book.

April–May

Cap and gown season. Once gowns are distributed, book the cap and gown mini session. Also the window for prom photos and sibling or family portraits before everyone scatters.

May–June

Graduation. Book any family portraits before the ceremony week. That week is chaos and everyone is exhausted.

What senior portraits cost in the Triad

I'll give you a straight answer, because most photographers won't.

My sessions start at $595 and most families invest between $1000-$1500 once prints and albums are included.

What drives the number: number of outfits, number of locations, whether you want digital files only or printed products, and whether you want a wall portrait and album.

Where we shoot in Guilford and Rockingham County

Some of my favorite locations include downtown Greensboro brick and murals, The Arboretum, Country Park, Lake Brandt, Chinqua-Penn area, downtown Reidsville, Lake Reidsville, Reynolda Gardens, Mayo River State Park, Dogwood Farm, Dewberry Farm, Atkinson Farm, and downtown Kernersville. The pulic spaces do not require permit fees while venues like Reynolda Gardens, Dogwood Farm and Dewberry Farm have an hourly photography fee of anywhere from $30-$50 an hour.

What Triad moms told me they wish they'd known

"Nobody told me the gown doesn't exist until April. Now that I think about it, it makes sense. I just didn't realize it was 2 separate sessions."

"I pushed for the pictures I wanted and got a kid with a fake smile. I should have been more easy going and let my son have a say in what his portraits were going to be."

"I should have brought the stuff. His cleats, his guitar. The things that make him, him. He would have been way more into it if I had."

"I bought digital files and never printed a single one. I realize now how important that was. So much so that I'm ordering an album now. Better late than never!"

Frequently asked questions

When should I book senior portraits? Between June and late September of the summer of senior year. That timing clears the late-October yearbook deadline at most Guilford and Rockingham County schools and gets you the best light and greenery.

Do I still need senior portraits if the school takes a yearbook photo? They serve different purposes. The school's photo is a required formal headshot for the yearbook. A senior portrait session produces the images you'll use for announcements, gifts, and your walls.

What's the difference between senior portraits and cap and gown photos? Senior portraits are taken the summer or fall before graduation and capture who your senior is. Cap and gown photos are taken in the spring after gowns are distributed and celebrate the accomplishment itself. Most families do both.

When is the yearbook deadline at my school?  Most schools in both counties fall in the late-October range, but it varies and it changes year to year.

How long does a senior session take? Typically 1.5 to 3 hours depending on outfits and locations.

How many outfits should my senior bring? Usually three to four.

What if it rains? If the weather isnt cooperating we will talk together about a reschedule date.

How far in advance do you book up? My June and July weekends are typically full by mid-April to May. Fall Weekends are always the first to go but weekdays can usually be found throughout fall.

Do you travel? Sure do!
